Hawaii by 50

Making our way through the states the kids decided it wasn’t fair if John and I hit it before them.  Hawaii wasn’t on the radar but since I spent the last year working 55+ hours a week we decided to take a real vacation to Hawaii.   Even Declan was up for the adventure.

Hawaii
Day 1. O’ahu

Wednesday night 9pm flight.  Empty plane out of Logan.  We were called to the desk and separated. Each given our own row for weight distribution.  There were only 30 people on the whole plane.  And we were lucky enough to have plenty of room to spare.

Straight to Pearl Harbor for a fascinating video on the history leading up to the attack.  Excited to take the boat out it was actually cancelled by the navy before we could board.

Day 2
Late start so John could log into work for a few hours.  Breakfast at the hotel then a day of driving across O’ahu.

Snuck in another Dole Whip.  I got boo’ed when I asked nora if she nay nay’ed.
Update Sunday: driving through Kauai on the way to a lighthouse we went towards a wildlife sanctuary.  On the side of the road were geese the size of a duck. Called NeNe.  So now they eat whip and see nene. Not impressed with my humor there.

Oahu Tony Roma’s 830 pm after a long day of driving and beaching.  Nora ordered ribs and chicken combo.  He came back to tell us there was no more chicken.  Yet again we hear “and we sold our last chicken” circa 2017 key west.

Arrival on Kauai brings more clouds and rain.  We went through a small surfing town. Had dinner at a place called Olympic.  Great chicken wraps.

Sunday: John went golfing and patrick tagged along for the ride.  It was cloudy windy and wet but they said it never actually rained for them and they actually put on sunblock for the first time since we got to Hawaii on Thursday.

Nora, kate and I drove towards Hanalei bay stopping at a lighthouse, Lydgate beach (way too dangerous for swimming) and Anini.  We loved the look of Anini and can’t wait to try out the new snorkel and mask hopefully tomorrow or Tuesday.   The girls like some of the activities at the Point at Poipu and hope to try hula lessons, ukulele lessons and bracelet making.
Declan decided to stay in since it was windy and rainy this morning and he caught up on football but joined us later for swimming at sunset (behind the clouds) at Poipu.  There were all of seven people total in the water but they enjoyed seeing the turtles swim right up to them.
I love hearing the Spanish.   It was “Hi Tortuga” from Kate.
Although she and I have both been caught answering a welcoming greeting of Aloha with Hola.

Another day no sunblock.UV index of 1 again.
Watched turtles on the beach at the hotel for a while then found the pool.
Kids did a Ukele lesson at the hotel.
Lunch at chicken in a barrel- good service.  Food wasn’t bad.

Snorkeling at Anini

Dinner.  Pizza from Pizettas   Not bad kids really liked the bbq chicken pizza and John had a meat lovers calzone.

Tuesday:

Waimea Canyon
Gorgeous 20 mile drive to some high elevations to see the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”
Gorgeous views.  John and Nora took a chance on one cliff. The rest of us couldn’t watch.

Lunch at the Wrangler in Waimea burgers were decent Declans steak was a 7.2.   Patrick liked his quesadilla. Service was good.

Walked through some stores and saw the spouting horn which was mesmerizing.

John cooked on the grill by the pool for dinner.

Wednesday

Up for a walk. Patrick and I went to the turtle viewing area and then found a nice covered swing on shipwreck beach.   Sat for hours.  Saw a whale spouting, lots of crabs and about five or six turtles. John joined us and took a dip.  Waves were big but he managed to stay up.   We shopped at the Hawaiian trading post. Bought some souvenirs

Lunch at Merrimans Burger and Pizza.  It was 25%off for happy hour.  Had a nice strawberry lemonade.  Their blender was broken so no Virgin pina coladas but there is a Lamperts who has Dole Whip so we will have that for desert.

Thursday

John golfed at Poipu Bay golf course. Said it was 10/10.  Kate got to drive the cart.
Patrick Nora and Declan all went on a Kayak tour by Outfitters Kauai.  They loved it. The guide made Nora a bracelet.  Declan tried to rope swing. Patrick was more successful.
Declan tried a burrito at DaCrack and said it was excellent.
A dip in shipwreck beach then showers and a nice dinner at Ruth Chris.  Declan was checking out the menu and since the water is choppy we won’t be getting the snorkel trip I wanted so we will do a nice dinner instead.
